The remains of the Hittites language were found in excavations of Hattusa. The Hittites borrow the writing form of cuneiform from the Akkadians. They borrowed it from the Sumerians who first invented cuneiform. When the Hittite language was written down, it represented Akkadian or Sumerian language as well. Indo-European Anatolian languages are used in the Hittites society. Other Anatlian languages used were Lycian, Milyan, Carian, Pisidian, Palaic, and Lydian. Today, both non-Indo-Eruopean and Indo-European languages are still spoken in Antolia. Laws to the Hittites were called The Laws. They dated back to the Old Kingdom or around 1600 BCE. Retribution to the offender is when the offender is punished for their misdeeds. Compensation is when the victim is given something to repay for the loss acquired. When there is a murder, the murder victim's family would decide the fate of the murderer. The death penalty started to not be used as often, unless saved by a specific local custom. A large part of the laws were about sexual offenses mostly about bestiality and incest. Bestiality with a sheep would mean that a person would be put to death. Bestiality with a horse or mule is not punishable, but the person would not be able to enter the King's palace or be in his presence. The next part of The Laws is Collective Responsibility. That is when family or community is responsible for the actions of its members. If a murder was committed on your property, but not by you, you were to give your property to the victim's family. If the family was a woman, then they would have had to pay her 120 shekels of silver. On an uncultivated field, any people within a certain radius of that spot were liable. Also if a person disobeys the King's orders, the local official of that area where the offender lives could also be put to death by execution.
Common jobs of the Hittites were tool making (iron making), building chariots, and the traders were big in commerce. The traders usually traded pottery, fruits, weapons, cattle, and livestock with China. There were many slaves, freemen, rulers, subjects, soldiers, artisans, priests, and old-women. The nobles, priests, and priestesses were at the top. Next came the merchants followed by the slaves. The slaves were not at the bottom of the class. After the slaves came the hapiru
